Mayor Jim Brainard is Carmelââ¬â¢s first six-term mayor. During that time, Carmel has grown in
population from 25,000 to almost 100,000. Parkland, greenspace and trails have increased. The
development of an Arts & Design District, a downtown called City Center and a new Midtown
project joining the two together, has helped in the creation of a vibrant, thriving city where
companies want to locate and where families want to live. Mayor Brainard is frequently asked to speak around the world about city planning,
redevelopment, roadway networks and climate policy. He has encouraged the construction of
roundabouts, which reduces accidents with injury almost 80 percent at intersections. Carmel now has 122 roundabout intersections. Mayor Brainard serves as a Trustee and Co-chair of the Energy Independence and Climate Protection Task Force for the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
In November of 2013 he was appointed to the Task Force on Climate Preparedness and
Resilience by the President of the United States. Mayor Brainardââ¬â¢s academic background
includes a Bachelor of Arts in History from Butler University, Doctor of Jurisprudence from Ohio Northern University and a diploma from the Oxford Institute on
International and Comparative Law from the University of San Diego.

Indiana University Calliope
The IU Calliope has a really interesting history. It was built in 1923 and was the last documented calliope built by the Thomas J. Nichol Company in Cincinnati, Oh. They were the premiere builders of steam calliopes from 1890 until the business dried up in the early 1920's. What made them so special was the particular metals they used and the styles of whistle they built. The metals were brass and copper. Particularly copper was what made them special. The copper is a less dense metal and gives a much mellower tone than the harder brass construction.
When Capt. Thomas Reynolds was building his last and finest showboat, the MAJESTIC (in 1923) at Point Pleasant WV, he purchased what would be the last Thomas J. Nichol steam calliope built for it. This calliope would be played as the vessel came into town. IU removed the Calliope from the Majestic and installed it in this circus wagon to celebrate the Bicentennial of the United States in 1976.
Today it is used by the campuses of Indiana University in its historic role as goodwill ambassador for the University and appears in parades and events on the campuses. With the bicentennial of the university in 2020, it will be utilized in many events and the historic sound will reverberate along this hills and valleys of the state to celebrate this great milestone.
