Grand Marshals Robert & Sandy Tanner
Walking in Robert Tannerââ¬â¢s bike shop, Bikeââ¬â¢s by Bob, itââ¬â¢s hard to avoid buying a delicious coffee imported from Vienna, Austria and having a heartfelt conversation with people who work there.
Tanner and his son Kristofor used to run their bike shop near Dairy Queen on Litchfieldââ¬â¢s north end. But after Kristoforââ¬â¢s death, which involved a head-on collision with a semi-truck on Sept. 30, 2013, it brought a profound change to how Tanner wanted to run his business. His philosophy became more about spending quality time with his customers and meeting their needs, he said.
ââ¬ÅI like to spend time with people,ââ¬Â Tanner said. ââ¬ÅAnd make sure Iââ¬â¢m getting them the right thing. But itââ¬â¢s also about ministering to peopleââ¬â¢s needs. Itââ¬â¢s not about making money. Itââ¬â¢s about honoring God.ââ¬Â
Two years after Kristoforââ¬â¢s death, Tanner moved his bike shop to Litchfield on East U.S. Highway 12, in order to effectively serve the community, he said. For his new shop, he made sure to purchase a bigger space to include a cafeteria, so people can come and have a meaningful conversation. Tanner said he doesnââ¬â¢t focus on making a profit but making sure people are satisfied upon leaving the shop.
Tannerââ¬â¢s work ethic, love for people and his ability to build valuable friendships for 15 years has led him to be named the 2019 Litchfield Watercade grand marshal. He and his wife Sandy Tanner were selected for the honor. Sandy will not be able to ride in the parade, so his niece, Calin McCullers, will ride in her place.
A community member who demonstrates involvement in the life of the community and who shows a history of administering to the needs of others is honored at the Watercade Grand Day Parade Saturday, July 13. The parade begins at 6 p.m.
Tanner also makes sure he sells the right bike to his customers by looking at their age and other relevant medical information, he said.
ââ¬ÅSo I always ask to a lot of my customers a lot of medical things,ââ¬Â he said. ââ¬ÅTo see if I can figure out whatââ¬â¢s the best bike for them to ride. ââ¬Â¦ Men who are 45 years old, their hands will go to sleep (if) theyââ¬â¢re leaned over (if) their arms are stretched. (And) women who have had (a baby) shouldnââ¬â¢t be (leaning) over (on a) bike.ââ¬Â
Tanner said that his business is doing well, and he makes just enough revenue to keep it going. Recently, he purchased a ton of fat bikes, during the winter. And he will be selling these bikes to Evangelical camp, Green Lake Bible camp and Timber Bay camp at a discounted price.
Tannerââ¬â¢s daughter, Natasha McCullers, helps in her fatherââ¬â¢s shop. She said Kristofor has given her family a big connection to a lot of people in the area. People who come by the shop might be going through hard times and need to just sit down and talk to someone.
ââ¬ÅItââ¬â¢s about serving the community,ââ¬Â McCullers said. ââ¬ÅAnd part of serving the community is being there as a listening ear. Not many people have somebody that they can go to. And so having a coffee shop where you can come in and say, ââ¬ËI found out my daughter has cancer. Iââ¬â¢m having a really hard day,ââ¬â¢ and we can (respond), ââ¬ËHere, sit down. Iââ¬â¢ll get you a cup of coffee and tell me about it, and maybe we can pray about it if you want to.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬Â
Tanner said that God has helped him meet his needs and he is trying to help others see that in their lives.
ââ¬ÅThis is more important than making $200,000 a year,ââ¬Â he said.

Zuhrah Mariners
The Zuhrah Mariners were formed in 2002 as part of Zuhrah Shriners. The Mariners were formed to promote and encourage participation in Masonry and Shrinedom with a spirit of unity, fellowship and friendship among its members.
Currently, their captain is Nik Wagner and their Lieutenant is Brian Preuss, both of whom organize the activities of this unit.
Shriners International sponsors 23 Shriners Hospitals for Children across North America, including one in Minneapolis, where children can receive WORLD CLASS orthopedic and a variety of other cares at ABSOLUTELY NO COST TO THE PATIENT OR THEIR FAMILIES. We would be happy to direct anyone who knows of a child with medical needs to receive a free screening.
The Zuhrah Mariners participate in a variety of local parades in their six well-maintained mini-vehicles that are styled like small watercraft. Our members do this for the enjoyment of the public having while having fun themselves as one of the dozens of proud performing Units of the Zuhrah Shriners! The 2019 Northern Minnesota Arabian Horse Association Royalty, consisting of Queen - Ally Eblen, Prince - Zoe Eblen and Sweetheart - Lily Schlangen are excited to present this wonderful association and the Arabian Horse.
Since 1966, NMAHA has actively been promoting the breed, which is the oldest known bred of riding horse. The Arabian is known for its intelligence, gentle disposition and incredible stamina, making them excel in most equine sports and activities. The association holds two shows each year, with one being at the Meeker County Fairgrounds in June. Spectators are encouraged to stop by and see these beautiful horses!
