The Traverse City Fire Department and their 1936 Pumper.
The Traverse City Fire Department was organized in 1876 and was located in the 200 block of East Front Street. Horse-drawn hose carts were utilized by volunteers to fire scenes. Volunteer firefighters included prominent local businessmen J.W. Milliken, B.J. Morgan, J. Martinek, and Julius Hannah, son of Traverse Citys founding father, Perry Hannah. In 1890 the station moved to 118 Cass Street and remained there until 1974.

The first steam fire engine was purchased in 1895. It was horse-drawn and had a pumping capacity of 500 gallons per minute. A second steam engine was purchased in 1901. These steam engines remained in service until the Fire Department motorized its fleet in the 1920s. The first regular motorized fire engine was an American LaFrance pumper with a pumping capacity of 1000 gallons a minute. Today the Department operates 2 Pierce Velocity engines and 1 KME engine as a backup. TCFD also operates a KME Aerial Cat Ladder Truck with a 100s tower ladder for the taller buildings in our area.

The Honor Guard serves at memorials, funerals and other ceremonial details like recruit graduations and awards banquets. The Drill and Marching Unit really enjoys opportunities to participate in parades and festivals where they get to interact with people and share the positive aspects and professionalism of the Department. The unit was formed in 1987 and has 32 members from across Michigan. The Honor Guard is led by Commander Kevin Smith and Asst. Commander Brandon Wenzel.

This band has been around for 30 + years and is proud to represent the musical side of the Festival. The Petoskey Steel Drum Band has been entertaining audiences around the country for the last 30 years, frequently performing in Northern Michigan, Chicago, and New Orleans. Founded by Petoskey Band Director Barry Bennett, this 40 piece ensemble celebrates the sounds of Caribbean Steel Drums by performing a variety of styles- from the Zak Brown Band to Christmas Carols to Jimmy Buffet and more.

This summer on July 3 the Petoskey Steel Drum Band participated in the Salute to Independence parade in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania celebrating the United States of Americas semiquincentennial or 250th birthday!

The Steel Drum Band is part of the Award-winning Petoskey band program, which includes concert, marching and jazz bands, with almost 400 students participating grades 6-12. The Petoskey Steel Drum Band is under the direction of Duane Willson.
The Petoskey Steel Drum Band will be performing in a parade in Philly on July 3 at noon and then will load back up and head home with all of our students parent chaperones and double deck bus float for our Petoskey 4th of July parade to celebrate the 250th with our hometown crowd at 6 pm July 4th

State Representative Betsy Coffia is serving her second term in the Michigan State House. She represents House District 103, which comprises Leelanau County and parts of Grand Traverse County and Benzie County. A signature accomplishment during Representative Coffias time in the state legislature focused on fair funding for students in rural schools. She secured an increase in funding the state budget for rural school districts for school busing costs, which has been disproportionately funded for decades. After going into retirement from a "real vocation" ,Cheri Cherry went to Clown Camp in at the University of Wisconsin in La Cross to become a "Caring Clown". Fire Officers with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are responsible for protecting millions of acres of state and private lands across the state from wildfires. Here they ride with Smokey Bear the national symbol for Wildfire Prevention. He was born in 1944 when it was decided a fictional bear named Smokey would be the symbol for forest fire prevention.

Smokey Bear soon became very popular, and his image appeared on a lot of forest fire prevention materials. In 1947 his slogan became the familiar Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires!, which was later updated to be Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires! In 1950 in the mountains of New Mexico, a young bear cub was found in a burning forest. Badly burned, he climbed a tree to survive. News about the real Smokey spread quickly, and he moved to his new home at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. where he lived out the rest of his life as the living symbol of Smokey Bear.

Fire safety isn't just for Smokey Bear - it's your job, too! Nine out of ten wildfires in Michigan and across the nation are caused by humans. Civil Air Patrol is the volunteer arm of the USAF. We serve our community, State, and Nation as an emergency services organization. We also focus on aerospace education, STEM programs and leadership development for youth ages 12-18.
The color guard a formally trained unit that is comprised of 4 cadets: two on the ends of the row guard our Nation's flag, and the Michigan Wing Civil Air Patrol Flag. The cadets are wearing USAF type "dress blue" uniform and the added color guard cords and belts.
CAP was formed on December 1, 1941 by citizen volunteer pilots across America, in an effort to protect our costal borders from German attacks. After close of WWII our focus has been search and rescue, disaster relief and the most robust youth program in America! Our squadron has been a continuous asset to Traverse City since the 1950s. The Kingsley High School NJROTC Unit proudly represents Northern Michigan as the only program of its kind in the region. Now in just its second year, the unit has quickly grown to 65 cadets from a student body of only 300, reflecting strong commitment and enthusiasm for leadership and service. Their Academic Team earned 1st Place in Area 15, competing against 60 schools across 7 states, and went on to place 20th in the nation. The Warrior Marching Band summer program spends June on parade in local communities. In July, there is opportunity to travel out of state. Open to students currently in grades 8-12, the most common way to participate is by marching and playing an instrument. However, students are also needed for Honor Guard (banner/U.S. flag, etc.) and Color Guard (colorful flags). In addition to learning valuable musical skills, mental toughness and discipline, teens are blessed with many opportunities to witness their Christian faith. Countless teens share that some of their favorite memories are from band trips!

The West Senior High Bands are comprised of the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, Concert Band, Green and Gold Jazz Bands and Titan Marching Band. Band students also participate as instrumentalists for theatre productions, and the drum line performs regularly at athletic events throughout the year. The Wind Ensemble was selected to perform at the Michigan Music Conference in 2005, 2009 and 2023. The bands are under the direction of head director Chad Mielens, assistant director Dawson Peek, drumline director Doug Downer and color guard instructor Kate Walski.

Once upon a time, Prince Jefferson and Princess Annette, who hail from the village of Elk Rapids Lakeland Elementary, came upon a beloved Mother Goose book. With curiosity, they dusted it off and cracked open the worn magical pages. Nursery rhymes began to come to life and leap out. The verses of Hickery Dickory Dock, Hey Diddle Diddle, Sing a Song of Sixpence and more came alive! The eager readers, ran up a hill to come upon a well. Settling upon the fabled well, they watched the characters of old sing songs of their classic tales.

The HERD is celebrating its 40th year. Throughout its existence, the band has prided itself on its positive approach to competition in the marching arts. The students work hard, enjoy each others company, perform as well as they can, and appreciate the efforts and accomplishments of competitors from other schools. More than anything, members of The HERD are marching band fans that believe that their participation helps to develop essential skills found in well-rounded young adults.

T.C. Swing Dance By The Bay is a local swing dance group, led by the community for the community. As a cherry festival event, they will be dancing downtown at Clinch Park Pavilion tonight and every Saturday throughout the summer 6:30-9pm! The bands continue a long tradition of musical excellence in our area, performing throughout the State of Michigan, and at places like Carnegie Hall and Disney World!

The Tiger Marching Band tradition continues into its 56th year of activity and excellence. This marching band is composed of students in grades 7-12 from Lincoln High School in Lake City, Minnesota.

The Cadillac jeepers started the annual Jeep Blessing 25 years ago. Their mission was to combine their passion for Jeeping along with a blessing for safety for the oncoming season. Since the beginning, it’s grown into a beautifully organized event, including official Jeep Blessing apparel, vendors, Food, five challenging courses as well as a kids power wheels course and RC course. This year was our 25th anniversary, which included a flyover honoring our late founder, Gordy Stafford as well as taps performed by his daughter. The Pleva's Meats sausage making float has been one of the most beloved parade entries for over 25 years in the National Cherry Festival Parades. Ray Pleva was the first meat cutter to incorporate cherries into meat products and created over 30 cherry enhanced meats. His unique and healthy meat products landed him on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Home Improvement in the 1990's. Ray is joined by his family and the original members of Mike Flees and the Escapades polka band.
