Traverse City Fire Department
The Traverse City Fire Department and their 1936 Pumper.
The Traverse City Fire Department was organized in 1876 and was located in the 200 block of East Front Street. Horse-drawn hose carts were utilized by volunteers to fire scenes. Volunteer firefighters included prominent local businessmen J.W. Milliken, B.J. Morgan, J. Martinek, and Julius Hannah, son of Traverse Cityâs founding father, Perry Hannah. In 1890 the station moved to 118 Cass Street and remained there until 1974.
The first steam fire engine was purchased in 1895. It was horse-drawn and had a pumping capacity of 500 gallons per minute. A second steam engine was purchased in 1901. These steam engines remained in service until the Fire Department motorized its fleet in the 1920s. The first regular motorized fire engine was an American LaFrance pumper with a pumping capacity of 1000 gallons a minute. Today the Department operates 2 Pierce Velocity engines and 1 KME engine as a backup. TCFD also operates a KME Aerial Cat Ladder Truck with a 100â tower ladder for the taller buildings in our area.

Grand Marshall - Smokey Bear
Smokey Bear was born on August 9, 1944, when the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council agreed that a fictional bear named Smokey would be their symbol for forest fire prevention.
Artist Albert Staehle was asked to paint the first poster of Smokey Bear. It showed Smokey pouring a bucket of water on a campfire and saying âCare will prevent 9 out of 10 fires.â Smokey Bear soon became very popular, and his image appeared on a lot of forest fire prevention materials. In 1947 his slogan became the familiar âOnly YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires!â, which was later updated to be âOnly YOU Can Prevent Wildfires!â
Then in the spring of 1950, in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, a young bear cub found himself caught in a burning forest. He climbed a tree to survive, but he was still badly burned. The firefighters who retrieved him were so moved by his bravery, they named him Smokey.
News about this real bear named Smokey spread across the nation, and he was soon given a new home at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. As the living symbol of Smokey Bear, he played an important role in spreading messages of wildfire prevention and forest conservation. Smokey died in 1976 and was returned to Capitan, New Mexico, where he is buried at the State Historical Park, now called Smokey Bear Historical Park.

Airstation Traverse City
Originally established as a one-plane detachment to provide search and rescue service to the Great Lakes, Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City was commissioned in 1945.
Ove the years, the air station has grown from its original small complement to its present staff of 17 officers and 110 enlisted personnel. In 180, the air station increased its building space when a new maintenance and administrative hangar was completed, providing over 50,000 square feet of work space.
In the spring of 1995, five HH-65A Dolphin helicopters replaced the three Jayhawks, which were transferred to Air Station Astoria, OR.
Upgraded Jayhawks returned to Traverse City in the summer of 2017, when three MH-60T Jayhawks replaced the four Dolphins. The Jayhawks provide a longer range and a larger cabin for executing complex search and rescue cases over a massive, often remote, eight-state area. In addition, the Jayhawk also boasts anti-ice/de-ice capability to better assist the citizens of the Great Lakes during harsh norther winters.

The Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States spanning more than 1.5 million acres, which is only 50% of what it used to be. Aside from providing shelter and protecting scores of wildlife, the Everglades is an important asset to humans as well. One out of every three Floridians rely on the Everglades for drinking water, thatâs over 8 million people relying on the Everglades for drinking water.

Eastern Elementary (North Country National Scenic Trail)
"Welcome to Eastern Elementary's beautiful float! Riding with pride are our very own Princess Florence and Prince Jack, both spirited first graders. This year, we celebrate the North Country National Scenic Trail.
Our float showcases the wonders of Michigan's section of the trail. Picture the amazing waterfalls, like those at Tahquamenon Falls, Sable Falls, and Wagner Falls. See the famous Mackinac Bridge, standing tall and proud. Our float has lots of green trees, just like the ones youâd find on the trail, home to many animals.
Feel the coziness of a campfire, perfect for toasting marshmallows and sharing stories under the stars. And donât miss the colorful wildflowers, just like the ones that grow along the trail.
Princess Florence and Prince Jack remind us of the wonder and adventure that await on the North Country National Scenic Trail. Let's celebrate the beauty of Michigan and the spirit of exploration embodied by our young royalty!"

Long Lake Elementary (Grand Tetons)
"Grand Teton National Park is a stunning national park in Wyoming. Tall and proud, the Tetons rise dramatically from the grasslands, cutting through the bluest skies and brightest sunrises. Established as a national park in 1929, this federal park boasts a diverse ecosystem with 310,000 acres of terrain.
Found within the park is the large and pristine Jenny Lake. Formed by glaciers 12,000 years ago, it is estimated to be 256 feet deep and encompasses 1,191 acres. Jenny Lake's shorelines offer beaches and rocky outcrops that are perfect for fishing for Lake Trout.
Hidden Falls trail is a 4.9 mile round trip route from Jenny Lake that eventually leads adventurers to a beautiful 100-foot waterfall in the middle of a forest, presenting hikers with views that are both charming and secluded, making Hidden Falls one of the most visited destinations in the park.
Grand Teton National Park forest gives way to the Alpine Fir tree, it stands supreme with pinecones near the top that are dark purple in color. Flowers spotted throughout the meadows include the yellow Showy Golden-eye, purple Lupine and red Indian Paintbrush.
The mountain range, lakes, waterfalls and meadows are accented by the presence of the park's resident wildlife. Black bears, grizzly bears, Bald Eagle, wolves, elk, squirrels and skunks are just a few that call the Grand Tetons home.
Few landscapes in the world are as striking and memorable as that of Grand Teton National Park.

Homeschooling In Northern MI (Acadia National Park)
Representing the Homeschoolers of Northern Michigan is Prince Von Grant-Wagner and Princess Aveline Meerman. They showcase Acadia National Park. At this park resides Cadillac Mountain, which is the first place to see the sunrise in the United States. This float celebrates this iconic feature with a cherry sunrise. Found on this national park island are rocky coastlines and ocean waves that you can see represented on the sides of the float. At the park, is the only nesting location for the Atlantic Puffin in the United States. Here, they are shown eating cherries. Throughout the float are Maineâs recognizable lobsters, also found munching on cherries. Many reclaimed materials were used for this float. The sun was created with wood from naturally fallen trees on a family farm, as well as pallets. The pine tree on the float was planted by the Princessâs mom as a child, which was lost in a recent storm. The Acadia sign was hand painted by a mom of a former Homeschool Cherry Princess. After researching Acadia National Park and having fun trying to highlight it with this float, these royal families cannot wait to see its beauty firsthand!

Lake Ann Elementary (Badlands National Park)
"Lake Ann Elementary, Prince Lincoln Ruoff and Princess Emma Guzinski present the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Established in 1939, the Badlands were redesignated a national park on November 10th, 1978.
The Badlands earned its name by presenting many challenges for travel to native tribes and early settlers. Surviving the bitter winters, searing summers, rugged terrain, and few water sources that are normally muddy and unsafe to drink, make this landscape live up to its name.
Badlands National Park is home to many resilient creatures, including some of the most endangered species in North America. The wildlife of this park includes Bison, Prairie Dogs, Pronghorns and Black-footed Ferrets, as well as many species of birds.
Layers of the rock formations in the park correspond with different moments in geologic time. The oldest dating back 69-75 million years ago when the area was covered by a shallow inland sea. A variety of fossils can be discovered within the park. The area now included in Badlands National Park is considered to be the birthplace of vertebrate paleontology in the American West. You can see some of the fossils discovered in the park under our Royals feet.
The Royals got creative to incorporate cherries into this harsh terrain. We used pin cherries to represent some the sparse vegetation found in the Badlands and juice from cherries was used to color layers in the rock formation.
Congratulations Lake Ann Elementary Husky Pup Royals!

The Scottville Clown Band
The Scottville Clown Band traces itâs roots back to 1903 when a mere handful of musicians started playing together for fun and entertainment. Today, the Band consists of members from all over the state of Michigan and beyond. The common denominators are music and fun. All members are volunteer and proceeds raised go to designated charitable acts. They have performed in and out of state to small and huge crowds alike. Traveling thousands of miles creating millions of smilesâ¦â¦â¦â¦. the Scottville Clown Band!
